Prop Firm Risk Rules Explained: Daily Loss Limits, Drawdown and Position Sizing
Share
Most traders who fail a futures prop firm evaluation don't fail because their entries were bad. They fail because one red day breaks a rule. Understanding the rules, and sizing every trade around them, matters more than finding a better signal.
Rules differ between firms and change often, so always check your firm's current terms. The concepts below are common across most of them.
The rules that end evaluations
Daily loss limit
A maximum you can lose in one trading day. Hit it and the account is either locked for the day or failed outright. It is usually measured including open trades, so a position that dips past the limit can break it even if it later recovers.
Trailing drawdown
The maximum your account can fall from its highest point. On many accounts this trails your peak balance (sometimes your peak unrealized balance) until it locks at the starting balance. Early profits raise the floor, so a big winner followed by giving back gains can fail you while you're still up overall.
Consistency rules
Some firms cap how much of your total profit can come from a single day, to stop one lucky trade passing the evaluation. A daily profit target helps you stay within it.
Size every trade in dollars, not contracts
The fix is simple: decide your dollar risk first, then let the stop distance decide your size.
Contracts = dollar risk ÷ (stop in points × point value)
Example on MNQ ($2 per point): you risk $700 and your stop is 35 points away. Each contract risks 35 × $2 = $70, so you trade 10 contracts. If tomorrow's stop is 70 points, you trade 5. The dollar risk never changes.
A simple framework for a $50K evaluation
- Pick a per-trade risk that lets you take at least two full losses before the daily limit.
- Stop trading for the day once you've lost a set amount below that limit, not at it.
- Set a daily profit target if your firm has a consistency rule.
- Close positions before the 17:00 ET futures break if your firm requires it.
- Cap the number of trades per day so one bad session can't spiral.
Automate the rules
Rules are easy to follow on a calm day and easy to break after two losses. Premium AI Signals builds these controls into the indicator: fixed dollar risk per trade, a daily loss guard that stops signals for the day, an optional daily profit target and an optional force-flat window. See all MNQ futures indicators.
Trading futures involves substantial risk of loss. No tool can guarantee that you pass an evaluation. Nothing here is financial advice.
